Singing the way we have come

“What can be better to inspire you in times you feel low than your own glee of the past? Than your own milestones? The time you learnt to ride a bicycle to the moment to realised algebra is easy? (Sorry if the latter isn’t your case!)…”

Well, a techy definition

Nostalgia is a sentimentality for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.

The word nostalgia is learned formation of a Greek compound, consisting of the Homeric nostos or “Homecoming” and the 17th Century Swiss word álgos meaning pain. Well, that pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?

This song vibes a little with all of us, doesn’t it?

Change is Permanent

“There is nothing permanent except change.” -Heraclitus

The old man Heraclitus speaks truth but lets go off an intrinsic human longing. Most, if not all of us, yearn for permanence or more accurately speaking, for stability. It is something observed not just as a firmament of human thought but also everything that is built around it — enterprise, politics, economies etc. Change creates a demand for new skills, for coping and hence often stresses the established flow in life.

But changes are healthy. They are an antidote to boredom, stagnation and satiation — which one may doubt anyone has ever achieved.

However, we still long for what is gone — childhood, youth, maybe friends, maybe family, maybe just a time when one was more witty or free.

Nostalgia is a feeling and an yearning

“Nostalgia is the warm, fuzzy emotion that we feel when we think about fond memories from our past,” explains Erica Hepper, Ph.D., a lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Surrey in England.

“It often feels bittersweet — mostly happy and comforting, but with a tinge of sadness that whatever we’re remembering is lost in some way.”

Well, it is often a smile that comes when we look back

Doesn’t that make nostalgia the perfect marketing tool? Indians might remember the paper-boat campaign with their juices and One Dimension’s song “The Story of my life”? Of course you know many more, don’t you?

A perfect Inspiration

What can be better to inspire you in times you feel low than your own glee of the past? Than your own milestones? The time you learnt to ride a bicycle to the moment to realised algebra is easy? (Sorry if the latter isn’t your case!) However, one must move on, that is of utmost necessity. One must live to the fullest today, smile to the fullest today, cry to the fullest today, so that your tomorrow has these ‘stupid’ and yet gleeful memories.

LIVE ON, PLAY ON and MAY YOU HAVE A DAY WORTH REMEMBERING, EVERYDAY…
