Emotional Fluctuations – the natural, short-lived changes in emotions

Daily emotional fluctuations are a normal part of the human experience. It is common to experience a range of emotions on a daily basis, such as happiness, sadness, anger, frustration, excitement, loneliness, and anxiety. These emotions can be triggered by a variety of factors, including events, thoughts, and physical sensations.

According to sources, there are three factors that affect a person’s emotions.

Biology, Psychology, and Environment.

Biological factors

In Chinese Medicine, it is said that the lung is affected by sadness, the heart by joy, the spleen by worry, the liver by anger, and the kidneys by fear or fright. Your hormones and brain structure also play an important role.

Your sleep schedule and food habits are a few important aspects in reference to biological factors. How long you sleep, at what time you fall asleep, what time you wake up, and whether you consume too much sugar or caffeine, can easily impact one’s emotions.

Psychological factors

Your emotions sometimes depend on the people around you, whether you surround yourself with people who boost your morale or with those who drain you.

Your attitude towards a situation depends on your knowledge, your beliefs, and your past experiences. How you deal with stress and other negative or difficult situations determine what emotions you’re going to feel while you face them. Suppose the results of a test are out and your score is low. One can take it as an opportunity for growth and improvement, face it with a smile and gain confidence, or feel hopeless, worry, get anxious about future performance. The latter would fill you with negative emotions and deter you from working hard to improve yourself and any positive emotions for the rest of your day. Whether you brighten up or get gloomy depends completely on what you want to feel.

Environmental factors

Your room’s lighting, food, attire, colors, temperature, and weather can all influence our emotions. Most of the time we cannot control these factors but what we ‘can’ do to control is how much we let them influence us. It’s important to pay attention to the environmental factors that affect our emotions and create a positive and supportive environment as much as possible. Though one might not always have the chance to be in a positive environment, staying calm and collecting one’s thoughts would really help.

Overall, it’s important to be aware of our emotions and to practice self-care and healthy coping strategies to manage them.
